Bozeman Democrat Jim Hamilton is using tainted data to justify gutting Montana’s public pensions. The logic behind Hamilton’s belief that the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) and the Teachers Retirement System (TRS) will face solvency issues down the road is flawed, to say the least, because it is based on research funded by a nationwide campaign to gut public pension benefits.
The research Rep. Hamilton uses comes from John Arnold. If the name John Arnold sounds familiar it’s likely because of his involvement in the 2001 Enron scandal. John Arnold walked away from that company’s collapse with a cool $8 million dollar bonus. Arnold’s golden parachute took him directly to Wall Street where he managed hedge funds and became a billionaire. He has since spent upwards of $50 million trying to gut public pensions through tainted research, astroturf political advocacy organizations, ballot initiatives, and donations to anti-pension politicians.
